Questions ?

by admin

QuestionsWe all have questions. Whether it is at work, around the house, at the hardware store, the car dealership, the YMCA, at your child’s school; we consciously ask and unconsciously have many questions every day. This is a normal part of being human. Another part of being human is the understanding that we don’t always get our questions answered and sometimes there just isn’t an answer to a question, or at least not a very good answer.

So, having established this common human experience that we all share, we can then all probably agree that humanity as a whole, and each of us individually in our own way, has questioned whether or not there is a God. This has happened all down through history and comes as no surprise. Also of no surprise, is the understanding that there has always been debate on how to answer that question. For the sake of discussion and the duration of this blog post, I want to address those of you who have, for the most part, answered the question, “Is there a God?” in the affirmative. If you are reading this post and you are unsure or normally answer that question with a “no”, please just humor me for a brief period here. Do not take offense; just accept my premise for the short time it takes to read this post. Think of it in the same way you do when you go to a movie like Star Wars. You know it is not true, but for the time you are there you allow your mind to process what you see and hear, as if it is. Then upon leaving the theater you step outside and the real world washes back over you and you remember that nothing you just experienced was real.

I have said everything above just to be able to set up a different question, but one that assumes the presence of ‘a God’. I apologize here, because while I have been inferring ‘one question’, really it is several that all kind of tie in together and lead in the same general direction.

The question is; can we question God? Should we question God? If he made us, and we naturally question things, due to natural curiosity, then doesn’t he or shouldn’t he expect us to question him? Is it OK to question God?

I personally believe that the answer to all of these questions is ‘Yes’.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.”

I agree with his sentiment. If there is a God, surely then he is big enough to handle our doubts and the questions that may arise from them.

If you have reared any children you surely know that you field a lot of questions, about everything. I still have questions for my parents or even for those who have been through something I haven’t yet, or have just been around longer than I have.

Knowledge is power and that is why we seek it. All of us do it all of the time, on many different levels, over any number of things. Having questions for the ultimate authority is and should be no different. So, is God big enough to handle any and all of our questions?

I think the answer has to be ‘yes’, or else he is not much of a God at all.

This has been a very long winded, yet purposeful way of getting you to see what it is that we are doing here with this website and with these blog posts and podcasts. We do have questions and we believe that they can be answered. We believe that all of you have these very same, if not similar questions. Maybe, you do not have a forum where you can feel safe, or comfortable enough to ask these questions and engage in discussions where additional clarification and/or truths can be found.

Please engage with us, through these various avenues and add your own experience, knowledge and thoughts to the discussion. We are not about trying to tear something down. We are, however, about finding as much clarity and truth that we can and let the chips fall where they may. By way of example, if you were a smoker and a doctor presented you with the evidence showing what could be or is happening to your body due to the smoking, you have a choice to make at that time. You may enjoy smoking and not really want to give it up because of the pleasure that you perceive that you get from it. Still, you now know that if you do not give it up, regardless of the pleasure you derive from it, it is continuing to hurt you. If you could get the same sort of pleasure from another activity, that did not hurt you, why would you continue to engage in the hurtful behavior?

We will continue to explore those areas of the spiritual life that we engage in and try to determine which of these things really bring life and vitality to the body, mind and spirit and which ones do not. Only then can we make informed decisions on what things we will continue to engage in and what things may no longer be necessary.
